These Japanese seven spice roasted potatoes aka sakura shichimi potatoes are a brilliant spicy side dish. They're crispy and aromatic with quite a bit of heat too! So tasty and very moreish!

Potatoes are one of my favourite things to cook in the air fryer and the amount of potato side dishes I've air fried is endless! Especially spicy potato recipes like these ones.
I've used sakura shichimi to add spice and flavour to these air fried potatoes. It's also known as Japanese seven spice and is a blend of 7 different spices including red chilli pepper but the actual composition varies between brands. It's hot, slighly nutty and slightly citrussy too. It works brilliantly with potatoes!
Ingredients in these sakura shichimi potatoes
I only used three ingredients to make these potatoes. They were:
- Potatoes - I used floury potatoes as they are better for roasting. They go crispier than waxy ones and pick up more flavour on the outside.
- Sakura Shichimi (Japanese 7 Spice Blend) - Different brands will vary a little in flavour but all will be hot, slightly citrusy and a little nutty.
- Oil - I use rapeseed oil but any relatively flavourless vegetable oil will work.

How to make sakura shichimi potatoes
I always like to boil my potatoes first. This helps to make sure they are all cooked through and also the outside of the potato will break down just a little so there is more surface area for the spices and oil to cling too.
Toss the potatoes will the oil and sakura shichimi and put them in the air fryer. Air fry for 15-20 minutes at 200C. They should be golden and crispy when they are ready.
What can you serve with these potatoes?
I think these potatoes are so good I can sit down and eat a whole plateful with a little mayonnaise to dip them in.
However, they are also a delicious side dish with grilled meat and fish or basically anything that you'd choose to eat with chips or potatoes.
You can also make them into loaded potatoes by topping with meat, salad, dips and cheese.

Can you adapt the recipe?
Yes you can! Why not just use this basic recipe as inspiration and use a different spice blend?
If you are short on time you can skip boiling the potatoes first but you'll have to air fry them for longer and keep shaking the drawer to make sure all the potatoes are cooked through.
Instead of using regular potatoes, why not use sweet potatoes, butternut squash or pumpkin. If you do, you won't need to boil them first as they cook more quickly than regular potatoes.
Storing and reheating
You can store any leftover potatoes in the fridge for up to three days. Just reheat them in the air fryer till crispy again.

More ways to use Sakura Shichimi
Sakura shichimi is often used to add flavour to dishes just before serving. You can spinkle it over stir fries, on noodles, on sushi or rice dishes. You can use it as a general seasoning instead of salt and papper and spinkle it on cooked meat or tofu.
I've also tried stirring it into mayonnaise and serving it with chips or on potato salad. There really are so many ways to use it.
